Back-Ground: We rush to solve a problem without taking the time to understand the "root cause" of the problem. We often put a band-aid to solve the problem verses fixing the real issue. Read the following to get some ideas:

Problem framing

After we decide on what is the problem we want to solve; We need to develop the requirements that define the problem.

Requirements:

• Formalize what the design has to accomplish

• Safety, function, interaction, character

• “The design should…”

• Specify the need, not the solution: – Good: “provide space for a family of six to eat together” – Bad: “include a dining table in the middle of the room.”

These Requirements will be used to judge your designs.

Begin the understanding of the Engineering mind-set( All the activities around a problem solving process )

A story that integrates the life-skills into what we are doing:

In deciding what problem we will work on, we use team-work skills to "listen, communicate, review, negotiate, plan and schedule" our work. We need to understand who is the customer of what we are doing and their needs. We have to take a system view in all the factors associated with the problem and how we will begin to solve it (who is opposed to this solution, what other options do we have?). Questions are the key to unlocking all the factors that effect what we are doing. We must set measurements for our deliverables in this process including the financial implementations with the effect.

In creating the requirements, our thoughts should focus on how are we going to measure if we are successful or not. This gets us thinking about measurements and the community needs.
